In order to improve breastfeeding rates in Djibouti, community-based programs for awareness raising were implemented in 2007. Prior to program intervention, qualitative research was conducted in order to identify factors linked to low breastfeeding rates and ‘key actors’ likely to be able to influence new mothers. Based on results from the study, grandmothers were invited to participate in the program as trainees and, subsequently, trainers, in order to solve issues around social norms and values that might impede breastfeeding. The NIH asserts that ECE leads to higher test scores for students from preschool through age 21, improved grades in math and reading, and stronger odds that students will keep going to school and attend college. A study was conducted by the Aga Khan Development Network's Madrasa Early Childhood Programme on the impact that early childhood education had on students’ performance in grade school. Looking specifically at students who attended the Madrasa Early Childhood schools , the study found that they had consistently ranked in the top 20% in grade 1 classes. The study also concluded that any formal early childhood education contributed to higher levels of cognitive development in language, mathematics, and non-verbal reasoning skills. By providing education in a child's most formative years, ECE also has the capacity to pre-emptively begin closing the educational achievement gap between low and high-income students before formal schooling begins. Evidence of the ways in which pre-primary education advances development exists around the world. The 8-week Teaching and Learning Strategies for Higher Education online short course is delivered by Harvard’s Bok Center for Teaching and Learning, in association with HarvardX. Students in this course will engage deeply with the most relevant research on effective teaching methods in the higher education context, while refining their own practices, portfolio, and teaching philosophy.
